Good frame, worn upholstery – the starting point
We’ve all been there: The frame is still in great shape, but the look has taken a bit of a beating over the years. Of course, we’re talking about furniture here. 😉 Especially office chairs, which have to endure a lot day in and day out.
That’s exactly how it was with these Giroflex 64 chairs from a recent office furniture salvage project. The chairs arrived in generally good condition. The frames were sturdy, the mechanisms worked, and it quickly became clear: these models were far from done. It was only the upholstery that had lost its comfort. Visually and hygienically, it was no longer in a condition that would make you want to sit on it again. So the decision was clear: these chairs would not just get a cleaning from us, but a proper refurbishment with new upholstery and new gas springs.
Why it's worth upgrading to the Giroflex 64
Not every used chair we receive undergoes a full refurbishment. The Giroflex 64 does—and for good reason. This chair is a true classic, built to last and designed for long-term use. The frame is sturdy, the mechanism works perfectly, and the quality speaks for itself. It would be a shame to discard it just because the upholstery is worn out and the gas spring is past its prime.
If you invest in quality, don't be too quick to write off good products. Sometimes all it takes is a little expertise, some manual work, and a bit of extra care to turn something used into something truly impressive again.

First, the old upholstery is removed. The seat and backrest are clipped into place. That sounds easier than it is, because there are also two metal hooks on the backrest that hold everything in place. Everything must be carefully detached without damaging the frame.
Next up is the gas spring. It’s located at the bottom of the chair, embedded in the swivel base. Anyone who’s ever taken a chair apart knows: things that have been in there for a long time don’t come out easily. Marcel uses a rubber mallet and WD-40 for this. With chairs that have been used intensively for years, this can be a bit of a struggle. Dirt, dust, and the weight of heavy users over the years cause the spring to become firmly lodged in place.
The chair is then thoroughly cleaned before the new upholstery is installed with quick, firm movements. This must be done quickly to ensure that everything snaps into place and fits securely. Finally, the chair is placed back onto the new gas spring and locked into position in the swivel base using its own weight. Done.
The result: Like new—with the soul of a classic
The result is impressive. An office chair that looks and feels like new—but offers the stability and quality of a tried-and-true classic. The Giroflex 64 wasn’t built to last just a few years, and with fresh upholstery and a new gas spring, it’s ready for the next twenty.
